A Gift For Thrift

Hi people!!

Welcome to a new episode of Sam’s Thrifty Finds. No really, I feel like I’m always bargaining, and I actually hate paying full price for things. Because of my hatred for overly priced goods, I tend to love thrift stores!

When I first started thrifting I would always buy useless things that I felt would eventually serve a purpose, and I’m here to show all of you how to go thrifting with a plan and leave completely satisfied! Let’s begin.

I have been looking on Pinterest for ideas to decorate my room for the new school year. The vibe I’m going for is very minimal, antique, modern, and Anthropology-ish. Got it? I knew I wanted to include some wicker baskets, whites, plants, and maybe some antique looking pieces. I also always venture off into the denim section just because I love clothes.

Find an alternative purpose for items.

For some reason thrift stores are filled with wicker items, so I was in luck! I found a picture of a wicker basket arrangement as wall decor and immediately started trying to find pieces that I could recreate this with. The item on the bottom is originally used for holding paper plates, the middle is an actual basket, and the top item is, well I’m not sure but it fit the part perfectly! I stumbled upon these three treasures and spent a total of seven dollars and moved onto my next assignment.

Know your aesthetic.

I found the wicker cup on the left and white cup on the right sitting next to each other. I grabbed both items simply because they go exactly with the theme I want throughout my room. Wicker…check, white…check, modern…check, antique…check!! These items compliment each other and tie in a theme so easily. I then found the glass bottle at T.J. Maxx to compliment the other two items. Once you have a theme to go off of, your aesthetic will form naturally.

Change things!

If you look back at the first picture included in this post you will notice it contains a pair of jeans, and not denim shorts. You guessed it! I cut them! I paid three dollars for these and chopped the legs right off. I’ve done this with many other pants, shirts, and decor pieces I own. I change them until I like them, because I like doing things like that, and it only costs me a few bucks if I mess anything up. I will most like wear these thrifted, little boy, Target jeans more than I wear my Levi’s from Nordstrom!

Hope I inspired you to check out your local thrift stores to turn someone else’s trash into your new treasure!

Make sure to check out my Thrift With Me Vlog!!

Happy thrifting!

November Favorites

Hey friends!

Another month has left us, and as seasons change, so do my preferences! For this month’s recap/post I put together a little November favorites list! Enjoy! 🙂

  • Rosehip Oil: Great for hydrating and the reduction of dark spots or scars.
  • Tea Tree Oil: Good for an acne spot treatment!
  • Murad Essential-C Moisture: This moisturizer helps to lock in moisture on my face so I don’t get dry skin in the colder months. (Even though it was just 90 degrees in California)
  • Murad Essential-C Night Moisture: I recently discovered that putting moisturizers with sunscreen on at night isn’t good for your skin, because you’re adding extra chemicals that aren’t necessary. I found that this night moisturizer without SPF is so hydrating and leaves my skin silky smooth from when I apply it until I wake up.

  • Neck Scarves: Easy way to jazz up a plain outfit, make a casual outfit look more dressy, tie around your ponytail, or on your purse!
  • Loud Print Shoes: What can I say, I’m just a loud girl who likes loud shoes. These are not for everyone, but they sure are fun to take your outfit up a notch!
  • Layering: I’ve been obsessed with throwing a cute dainty tank top over a plain t-shirt, or patterned long sleeve. This is a great outfit for days that are to cold without a jacket, but too hot with one.
  • Loafers: I ADORE the loafer trend. I recently snatched myself a tan pair, (my collection of black shoes was getting ridiculous) and love how easily they amp up my outfits to make me look very put together, while also being comfortable.

  • Gal Meets Glam: I’ve followed Julia Engel on Instagram for years, and have just rekindled with her blog. Both her blog and Instagram are AMAZING. LINK
  • The Everygirl: Chicago based blog that has a killer Instagram. Seriously has me planning a trip to Chicago. LINK
  • College Fashionista: Awesome blog written by college students including lifestyle, fashion, career advice, and more! DID I MENTION NEXT SEMESTER I WILL BE A COLLEGE FASHIONISTA STYLE GURU??? I have little information on what exactly I’ll be doing, but don’t worry I’m sure I’ll be posting everything, everywhere when the time comes… LINK

  • Prada Candy: If you know me well you know this perfume has been my signature scent for YEARS. I find myself not even considering another spray during the colder months just because this one is so warm and inviting.
  • Bath and Body Works Almond 3-Wick Candle: Of course I love this candle because it’s made with essential oils! The almond scent is sweet, warm, and perfect for cold weather!

5 Ridiculously Easy/Basic Hairstyles

Hey guys!

I have been so  busy moving back to school and haven’t had any time to make any new posts! I started school, and I am in the process of getting my routine back!

Unfortunately, I have 8 AM classes 3 times a week, so that means I have very limited time to get ready because I try and sleep as much as I can. I have mastered the art of styling my hair in a very short amount of time, and I thought I would share my go-to looks help out! All these styles require very little styling tools as well! 🙂

1. Messy Low Bun

Processed with VSCO with c1 presetProcessed with VSCO with c1 preset

I would like to thank this hairstyle for getting me through my life. This messy low bun can be a cute addition to a lazy outfit, or can be paired with something nicer to bring attention to your outfit. With short hair my buns only require a quick loop, but with long hair I either do a twisted cinnamon roll bun or a loop with a second hairband to secure the hair. I like to pull out my front layered pieces to make the style look more effortless and messy.

Required tools:

  • Hairbrush
  • Hairband

2. Messy High Bun

Processed with VSCO with c1 presetProcessed with VSCO with c1 preset

I like a high bun for hotter days, lazy days, or with a high neckline top. I repeat the same step of a loop bun but on the crown of my head and pull out fewer pieces in the front. With short hair I sometimes have to pin the hairs above my neck so they don’t fall out of the ponytail. Once you have mastered the art of a perfect messy bun, you have mastered the art of life.

Required tools:

  • Hairbrush
  • Hairband

3. Messy Low Ponytail

Processed with VSCO with c1 presetProcessed with VSCO with c1 preset

Another hairstyle that is ridiculously easy, but helps me to look way more put together than I am! A low ponytail can look a little more professional than a bun sometimes. I prefer to straighten the hair in the ponytail, but that step is completely optional. Something fun to add is a braided piece of hair to wrap around the ponytail to cover the hairband!

Required tools:

  • Hairbrush
  • Hairband

4. Slick Low Ponytail

Processed with VSCO with c1 presetProcessed with VSCO with c1 preset

I tuck my hair back when I have to look somewhat professional, want to highlight my makeup, or if my front layers are just frizzy and not cute lol. I like to pin pieces behind my ears to make sure they don’t move around. With a nice face of makeup and a good lip color, this easy slick pony can transform your entire look in less than a minute! I also like to add a pin at the base of my ponytail to give it a teased and tousled look.

Required tools:

  • Hairbrush
  • Hairband
  • Pins

5. Natural and Tousled

Processed with VSCO with c1 presetProcessed with VSCO with c1 preset

It has taken me years to figure out how to get the perfect curled hair that looks completely effortless AND doesn’t take me 45 minutes to achieve. I have finally mastered the look, but don’t hate me if it doesn’t work for you because really everyone’s hair is sooooo different. With that being said, I use a Hot Tools 1 1/4 inch curling iron, but use it with a wand technique. For my short/medium length people out there, I focus on only the top layer of my hair so its not so poofy. I hold the iron upside down with the tong open and wrap only 1-2 times away from my face for only about 5 seconds. I pick out random pieces around my head always curling outward, and finish by pinning one side behind my ear. I tousle and lift my hair at the roots to give a messy/thrown together look. For my people with longer hair I suggest using the same technique, but try wrapping your hair around the iron enough times so you have about an inch and a half of hair at the bottom that isn’t curled. This will make the curls look more beachy and relaxed rather than spiraled.

Required tools:

  • Curling iron/wand
  • Pin (optional)

This is the hair God gave me, so this is the hair I am familiar with styling. I have been styling my own hair as long as I can remember and I know it can be so frustrating to learn what works best for you. I suggest experimenting and not being afraid to try new things! (Like randomly deciding to chop off 6 inches LOL) 🙂

Thank you to my friends at Goody for sending me all my hair necessities just in time for back to school!! These items are lifesavers! 🙂

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale: What We got! (so far)

So you guys may just think that I enjoy fashion and clothes, but I actually have a shopping problem. I literally jump at any offer to go shopping (grocery, furniture, clothes, and don’t even get me started on Target). Naturally when my boyfriend told me he and his mom were going to the Nordstrom Early Access Sale, I cleared my entire day to tag along, even though I had already gone a week before. I wanted to share the items I picked up as well as my bf Alec. I pretty much pick out most of his clothes, and if I don’t he makes sure to get my approval before he buys whatever it is, so basically his style is my style lol!

If you don’t believe I have a shopping problem, the picture above is 4 hours after we first got to the mall, and I am still as energized as when we walked in, while Alec looks ready for a nap.

Alec’s Picks:

  • Topman Griffin Denim Jacket
  • $49.90 Sale Price // $75.00 Original Price

  • Topman Washed Denim Shirt
  • $35.90 Sale Price // $55.00 Original Price
  • Sperry Flex Deck Sneaker
  • $49.90 Sale Price // $74.95 Original Price

**Alec kept wandering out of the sale sections, so these are the only items he got that were actually part of the Anniversary sale!

My Picks:

  • BP Striped Jumpsuit
  • **Wasn’t exactly on sale but was in the section with the rest of the sale items, anyways it was $42 lol
  • Socialite Plunging Lace Romper
  • $49.90 Sale Price // $75.00 Original Price

  • Brixton Fiddler Faux Suede Cap
  • Sale Price $31.90 // Original Price $48.00
  • Love, Fire Floral Embroidered Ripped Denim Jacket
  • $45.90 Sale Price // $69.00 Original Price
  • **Huge shout out to my boyfriend’s mom for buying this for me when I couldn’t stop talking about it all day :’)

If you don’t have a Nordstrom card don’t worry because the Early Access Sale ends today, July 20th! Starting tomorrow, July 21st, the sale opens up to people who don’t have a Nordstrom card until August 6th! I suggest not giving up if you don’t find much after your first trip! Try driving out to Nordstrom stores in different areas, or look online! The markdowns on all these items were insane in my opinion! I’m so happy with all I got and can’t wait to wear them all!!!

My Go-To Summer Outfits/Pieces

Summer isn’t my favorite season to be honest. Especially living somewhere where temperatures reach a whopping 105! I prefer winter because the temp cools down to a chilly 65 degrees, which means I can pull out my North Face jackets (East Coast people are probably rolling there eyes right about now). I thought sharing my go-to summer outfits would help give some ideas to all you sweaty summer babes! All these outfits are simple and minimal. I would say my style is very practical because I prefer buying pieces that can be worn with many other items that I own so I get good wear out of my clothes! I also look for pieces that can easily be dressed up or dressed down!

1. Denim Jeans, Denim Shorts, skirts and “Fun Pants”

I like having a few options of different types of bottoms for summer so I don’t wear denim shorts everyday. My go-to options are shorts, cropped pants, and skirts. I prefer light-wash denim for both my jeans and shorts in the summer. I love these gold/mustardy colored pants to wear throughout both the summer and winter! Skirts are a super easy way to make an outfit look way more put together than it is by just switching out your normal go-to shorts to a cute printed or solid skirt! All these bottoms pair well with sandals, sneakers, or booties, and go great with so many different types of tops!

  • Denim Jeans: Zara
  • Pants: H&M
  • Denim Shorts: Levi’s
  • Grey skirt: Mustard Seed
  • Gold Sandals: Target

2. Light-weight tops

I like having many options of cute neutral tops to prevent running out of options when pairing with shorts, pants, or skirts. I usually gravitate towards solid colored tops, but when I do like a print it’s usually some sort of striped pattern. Greys, whites, and blacks go with literally everything so naturally I am always stocking up on different necklines, sleeve lengths, and trends of those colors. Neutral prints help to spice up an outfit without adding too much.

  • Striped top: Marshall’s
  • White top: Brandy Melville
  • Black top: Brandy Melville

3. Casual T-shirts

Having a light-weight t-shirt to throw on is always a convenient and effortless way to squeeze out a cute outfit. This cherry print brings in a fun detail to pair with hoop earrings and a dainty necklace. This outfit can be transformed for a night out with a pair of white sneakers, booties, sandals, and a leather/denim jacket.

  • White cherry top: Brandy Melville

4. Fun dresses

I like having a few dresses that I keep designated for special occasions and events. This happens to be a reoccurring favorite of mine! I recently wore this to a wedding and have previously worn it to dinners, banquets, and brunches. The fitted style of this dress makes it look elegant, while the fun floral print makes it casual at the same time. Dresses like this one pair great with strappy heels, wedges, and even a denim jacket to make it even more casual.

  • Yellow dress: Hollister

5. Two-piece sets and skirts

By far my favorite type of outfit!! Two-piece sets are so fun and convenient because you don’t have to decide on how to match your outfit pieces. I adore this set because if you can’t tell by now, I LOVE DENIM!!! Not only does it scream summer, but throw on a leather jacket and booties and it can scream winter or fall!! I added a cute brown belt to secure the skirt on my waist and threw on my favorite brown mules. Two-piece sets can be paired with sandals, sneakers, boots, etc. Making your own set is easy too! I’ve even made a few of my own sets by buying the same colored shorts and tops. I can wear these sets together or apart!

  • Denim set: Forever 21
  • Belt: Nordstrom
  • Mules: Steve Madden

6. Dainty jewelry

I’ve been obsessed with hoop earrings both silver and gold! A pair of these and a matching choker or dainty necklace goes with literally any outfit! I love pulling my hair back when wearing this combo to show off the earrings! I reccomend you spend a little more because cheap versions of these lose their color and eventually start turning your skin colors lol.

  • Hoop earrings: Forever 21
  • Necklace: Forever 21
